Long experience as an illustrator enables Characterz to create cost effective illustrations using a combination of conventional artists materials and computer technology. The conventional tools of pencils and paper provide a fluidity and a looseness that is difficult to achieve solely on a computer. But by using these sketches as a basis, careful computer production takes them into a digital format, essential for reproduction in the modern world of printing.

First stage is obviously the project briefing, this can usually be achieved by a conversation over the phone, though before embarking on an in depth brief it is a good idea to get to me any reference material, by post or email that is available. Generally the more info you can give me the better. During the briefing, we will discuss the approach that will be taken.

Proofs are supplied, usually via email, at all relevent stages, comments are always invited and all feedback is welcomed.

The second stage are the pencil sketches, these are the first drafts to the character and the technique allows for full development of a personality, generally they will show different positions and moods, they will almost certainly include notes and comments. It is most important to get this stage right as these sketches will form the basis for the final computer illustrations.
Not quite right? no problem, these sketches are always intended as discussion documents. Constructive comment is encouraged, good or bad it is always welcome. From experience it is always far easier to discuss a project sensibly once there is something to look at.

Third stage is the illustration process itself. Before starting, there will be a final pencil sketch proof submitted for final check and approval, once passed, the real thing is created.

This is generally started with the line work, it is usually worth pausing at the end of this stage to make a black line version of the illustration, whilst this lacks the oomph and impact of the colour version. It is nonetheless a useful piece of artwork for lower budget printing, or even as a childrens colouring sheet. If a mono line version is requested at the start of production, it incurs no additional fees.

Fourth and final stage is the completion. Proofs will be supplied and any final tweaks can be made before final completion.

On completion, the finished illustration is supplied in a set of formats to meet most print criteria. These are supplied as digital files on a disk (1 master disk, plus 2 duplicates for your distribution and backup). Also supplied will be an A4 Matchprint Proof, this is produced by an independent third party. It not only provides an accurate colour reproduction guide to the eventual printer but also provides the reassurance that the illustration has been fully tested at a cross platform level for print compatibility.
